Getting Started

  1. Install — Find ClickFile in Launchpad or your Applications folder and open it. It won't appear in the Dock — look for the viewfinder icon in your menu bar.
  2. Open at Login — On first launch, ClickFile asks if you'd like it to open automatically when you log in. Choose Yes or No.
  3. Choose a save folder — Click the menu bar icon and select Change Save Folder... to pick where your screenshots will be saved.
  4. Capture your first screenshot — Click the menu bar icon and choose Capture Full Screen, Capture Area, or Capture Window. A preview window appears where you can label and categorize before saving.
  5. Grant Screen Recording permission — When you capture for the first time, macOS will prompt you to allow Screen Recording. Follow the prompt to enable it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I grant Screen Recording permission?

When you first try to capture a screenshot, macOS will prompt you to grant Screen Recording permission. If you dismissed the prompt or need to enable it manually:

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Go to Privacy & Security
  3. Click Screen Recording
  4. Find ClickFile in the list and toggle it on
  5. You may need to restart ClickFile for the change to take effect
How do I change my save folder?

Click the ClickFile icon in your menu bar, then select Change Save Folder... from the dropdown menu. A folder picker will appear where you can choose a new location. All future screenshots will be saved to the new folder.

How do categories work?

Categories are sub-folders within your save folder. When you capture a screenshot, the preview window lets you:

  • Select an existing category from the dropdown (these are your existing sub-folders)
  • Type a new category name to create a new folder
  • Leave it blank to save directly to your root save folder

If you type a new category name, ClickFile will ask you to confirm before creating the folder.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

With the ClickFile menu open:

⌘1Capture Full Screen
⌘2Capture Selected Area
⌘3Capture Window
⌘QQuit

In the preview window:

ReturnSave screenshot
EscapeDiscard screenshot
TabMove between fields
Where are my screenshots saved?

Screenshots are saved to the folder you selected when you first launched ClickFile. The full path is shown in the preview window each time you capture. If you set a category, the screenshot is saved inside a sub-folder with that category name.

For example, if your save folder is ~/Pictures/Screenshots and you label a screenshot "Report" with category "Finance", it will be saved to ~/Pictures/Screenshots/Finance/Report.png.

What happens if a file with the same name already exists?

ClickFile automatically adds a numeric suffix to avoid overwriting existing files. For example, if Report.png already exists, the new file will be saved as Report-1.png. If that also exists, it becomes Report-2.png, and so on.

Does ClickFile collect any data?

No. ClickFile does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data. Everything stays on your Mac. There are no analytics, no tracking, and no network connections. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

What version of macOS do I need?

ClickFile requires macOS 15.6 (Sequoia) or later. It runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
